Tottenham have talked about signing a star who fits the Nuno system, the Levy pocket perfectly
Tottenham should seriously consider signing Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard, who matches Nuno Espirito Santo’s style of play, according to an expert.
New Spurs boss Nuno has a lot of work to do if he is to bring the club back in the Premier League table. President Daniel Levy has proposed a rebuild under Jose Mourinho after fears Mauricio Pochettino’s side may have peaked after the Champions League final. However, Mourinho is not doing much better.
As such, he was sacked in April and Spurs haven’t changed much since Pochettino left.
Nuno has had ties to a number of signings in his attempt to make his third chance with Levy’s managers. Indeed, the midfielder Joao Palhinha and striker Dusan Vlahovic would both be targets.
Meanwhile, Spurs reportedly open signature talks Danish international Vestergaard. Speculation comes in the middle doubts about the future of Toby Alderweireld north of London.
Talk to Football initiate, expert Alan Hutton insisted Vestergaard would be one of the best signings for Tottenham. Not only would he fit into Nuno’s tactics, but he would come quite cheap considering his contractual situation.
“I think he could go out there and do a job,” Hutton said.
“He obviously has experience playing for Southampton in the Premier League, he’s a main player for them. He has a nice diagonal ball.
“He can play in a three, he can play in a four so he’s flexible. We know Nuno likes to switch between the two, the back three or the four.
“Going into the final year of his contract, you can probably pick him up for a decent price, which would be in Daniel Levy’s favor.”
Vestergaard has played 79 times for Southampton since his transfer from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2018.
He is also a senior international, having played 28 times for Denmark. Indeed, he played all five Euro 2020 matches in his country and will participate in Wednesday’s semi-final with England.
Hutton added that Spurs would need a refresh at the back, with Vestergaard being an ideal signing.
Expert backs Tottenham and Vestergaard transfer
“For me Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have been the best partnership for a few seasons,” added the expert.
“They were exceptional but they were coming to the end. Alderweireld has only two years left on his contract, perhaps he could look to move on.
“There is room for new players. Vestergaard, his power, wow, strength, he doesn’t mind defending.
“He also has that kind of cultivated pass so I think he would fit in well with this team.”
