Rugby star Sam Warburton launches £ 500,000 fundraiser at Cardiff Dogs Home to completely renovate kennels
Cardiff Dogs Home received a special grant after rugby star Sam Warburton helped start a massive £ 500,000 refurbishment project.
The Rescue Hotel, a small group run by volunteers at home to fund the works, has now received £ 30,000 from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home charity, giving them a huge boost.
All the money will go towards the overall goal of £ 500,000 to refurbish the kennels, as part of a fundraiser led by a former Welsh international, the total currently standing at £ 117,000.
The Rescue Hotel administrator Toria Acreman said they were delighted to receive such a generous grant, which will help replace 44 of the house’s 30-year-old kennels.
Older kennels have little privacy and can be stressful for dogs. They are constructed from metal which has deteriorated over the years.
The renovations will include improvements to lighting, heating and drainage with sleeping platforms installed to keep dogs off the ground during the cold months. Staff are currently securing blankets inside the kennels to keep dogs as comfortable as possible, but strong walls will be installed.

There are currently 27 dogs for adoption at Cardiff Dogs Home website and they take care of up to 850 dogs per year, taking care of up to 1,000 stray dogs, rescues as well as signatures from Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.
The donation is part of the Battersea Grants program which supports small rescues and shelters.
Margaret Hulme, Head of Grants at Battersea, said: “We hope this grant will help make a real difference in the lives of animals. “
