“Northern Trust is committed to creating more equitable opportunities to ensure the long-term financial success of those who too often face unfair barriers,” said Shana Hayes, Managing Director of Philanthropy at Northern Trust. “We have chosen to focus our efforts in the areas where we believe we can do the most to advance this mission: food security, accessible health care, affordable housing and excellence in education.

Examples highlighted in the report include:

Northern Trust supports SOS Children’s Villages (India), which provides shelter and services to homeless children and other at-risk children, laying the foundation for academic success and a safer future.

When children can no longer live with their families, SOS Children’s Villages works with communities and state partners to provide children with alternative care to meet their needs.

Many households in Pune, India are headed by single women living in poor and vulnerable conditions. Government statistics estimate that a third of the population lives with inadequate access to basic services or infrastructure. Preventing poverty and abandonment is a priority for SOS Children’s Villages.

Northern Trust works with its philanthropic partners to support equity in education to foster human potential. A beneficiary highlighted in the report is The access project, based in England.

By helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds gain access to the best universities in the UK, The Access Project offers a unique combination of tuition and in-school mentoring that helps teenagers unlock their potential and transform their outlook.

In 2021, 7 out of 10 Access Project students secured placements at leading universities, including 10 in Oxbridge and 13 in medicine and dentistry programmes. In total, Northern Trust volunteers spent 50 hours tutoring students online in English, maths and psychology.

Health care

Northern Trust works to maximize health care access and awareness, which directly impacts physical and financial well-being, by supporting organizations such as Chicago Esperanza Health Centers.

The organization works with Chicago’s underserved communities through high-quality bilingual primary care, behavioral health and wellness services, regardless of immigration or insurance status, or ability to pay.

Northern Trust donations helped fund Esperanza’s day-to-day work throughout 2021, which included establishing four mass vaccination sites in southwest Chicago and delivering 150,000 doses of vaccine.

Additionally, Esperanza has significantly increased its mental health counseling team and created a daily on-call workflow where a designated mental health counselor is assigned to the clinic each day, allowing for immediate transfers from primary care providers as well the ability to cope with walk-ins and emergencies – while continuing to see their usual patients.

Food safety

The final area of philanthropic interest that Northern Trust focuses on is food security. The company seeks to ensure reliable, daily access to nutritious meals to boost focus, the ability to fully participate in school, and patterns that maintain long-term physical health.

Among the organizations supported by Northern Trust is the Global Food Bank Network – an international nonprofit organization that works for a future without hunger in more than 40 countries by supporting, uniting and strengthening food banks – and its partners, including Feeding America and the European Federation of Food Banks. During Northern Trust’s Global Service Month, the company donated 50 meals to these organizations for every hour of service performed by employees, which ultimately totaled over 600,000 meals.
