Man Utd rivals have warned Sancho deal was ‘terrible news’ as Ferdinand urges winger to ‘have fun’
Ex-Red Devils defender delighted to see Borussia Dortmund deal for England international
Rio Ferdinand has warned rivals Manchester United in the Premier League that Jadon Sancho’s imminent arrival at Old Trafford is “terrible news” for them, with the England international winger being asked to “entertain” the Red Devils.
A long transfer saga involving the 21-year-old forward is finally coming to an end, with a £ 73million ($ 101million) deal struck with Borussia Dortmund.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had his eyes on Sancho for some time and, after getting his man back, a big-budget rookie who has played in Germany for the past three seasons is expected to terrorize defenders of England’s top flight.
What was said?
Asked what Sancho will offer United, former Red Devils defender Ferdinand told his YouTube Channel FIVE: “On the right and on the left, we don’t have a winger who goes outside and can cross the ball. This is what you need.
“He can play on the right or on the left, he plays with both feet. On this right winger, as well as Mason [Greenwood] did and I’m a big fan of him, it’s Manchester United, who are always associated with the wingers.
“At all of our most successful times, there have been some wide players who can cross the ball. For a full-back, that’s terrible news!”
Will Sancho succeed at Old Trafford?
The most promising prospects were on Manchester City’s books as a youngster, but made the courageous decision to head to Dortmund in 2017.
He is expected to pick up an iconic No.7 shirt from United when he returns to his homeland, with Ferdinand confident Sancho will be able to emulate the efforts of Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo if he plays to his strength.
The former England international said: “I don’t need to tell him this because he loves his football, but work hard and make sure everything you do is aimed at being successful at Manchester United and being the best possible.
“Don’t let anything distract you. Be yourself, have fun and the end product is your goal. Bring it to the table.
“The energy and focus should be on football only. Just immerse yourself in everything about the club.”
Ferdinand added: “Sancho has arrived, Sancho is here! I feel beautiful.
“This boy, just look at his stats, they don’t lie. In terms of goalscoring implications, he was the second greatest in three seasons – that’s a fact.
“He has to convert that to the Premier League, which is difficult, we’ve seen, but listen, I believe in Jadon Sancho.
“Ever since he was a kid he’s had a hot press, hot expectations, he’s had the courage to leave Man City and go abroad. Personality, character.”
