‘Liverpool and Man City set the standards’ – Chelsea’s Tuchel closes the gap
We could well say that the Blues have already done it. After nine league games this season, the Blues are at the top of the Premier League table, one point above Liverpool and two ahead of City.
In the 2019-20 season, Liverpool finished with an incredible 99 points, City second at 81 and Manchester United and Chelsea with just 66 points.
But under Tuchel, the Stamford Bridge side have become a major force once again and many pundits are already backing them to win the league this quarter.
Asked if Chelsea closed the gap with Liverpool and City, Tuchel replied: “Maybe for now. There are only nine games. We have to prove it.
“Maybe we proved it in the last half of the season, but now it’s a new season and we have to prove it.
“It’s not enough to prove it for nine games, we have to prove it for the season. It will take us all. It will take all our courage, all our effort, all our discipline.
“It’s just going to take us all. It’s like running a marathon. This league is extremely exhausting. We have different competitions. We are ready for all competitions and the best result in all competitions. We are trying to close the gap.
“I have no problem admitting that there has been a gap over the last few seasons and that Liverpool and City have set the standards. They have created a certain mentality with their managers together over the years.
“We’re trying to shut it down, we’re confident enough to say from day one that we want to shut it down. This is what drives us. We’re going to work on it because it takes a lot to keep the momentum going.
Chelsea will look to extend their lead at the top of the table with a win over Newcastle tomorrow.
With United, Tottenham and Arsenal nowhere near the beat this year, many believe it could be a three-horse race, but Tuchel is not sure the season is still in its early stages.
‘Maybe, maybe not. We’re just focused on ourselves and we know what it takes, ”Tuchel said.
“Like I’ve said a number of times Liverpool and City have set the standards over the last four or five years and they show how consistent you have to be to collect points in this league, which seems like an effort to me. fantastic what they did.
“The title race was between them two, it’s up to us to challenge them. It is up to everyone else to join the race.
“I’m sure there are a lot of teams hungry for points. There is no prediction on my part about the end of this thing, who is involved.
“We are almost until October alone. November is coming. Looking at our table and our games in December and January, there is so much to play.
“There is so much needed in terms of focus, focus and consistency. That’s all I can answer.
