Downpatrick homes evacuated following ‘arson’ in apartment building
Houses and apartments in Downpatrick were evacuated this morning following an apartment building fire.
Police believe the fire was started on purpose and view the incident on Pegasus Walk as “arson with intent to endanger life.”
They said they were alerted to the blaze by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Services at around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday July 18.
Detective Sergeant Stewart said: “We received a report from colleagues at NIFRS of a fire in an apartment building around 9:30 am.
“Residents of neighboring houses and apartments had to be evacuated, but no one was injured in the incident.
“This fire could have resulted in serious injury or even loss of life and could easily have spread to neighboring properties.
“We are treating this as arson with the intent to endanger life and I ask anyone with information or who noticed suspicious activity at this time to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 811 from 07/18/21. “
