Cyclone Digital Rewind: Is it basketball season yet?
The distraction was understandable.
The Iowa State men’s basketball could hardly seem more invincible, the day after a season-opening exposure rash added to the feverish hype.
But Saturday was to be devoted to football.
“Can Fred (Hoiberg) coach football?” Asked reader Mark in Register’s Cyclone football live chat.
Throughout Iowa State’s 34-14 loss to Kansas, fans wanted to talk about the basketball season, Paul Rhoads’ professional status, and the upcoming football season.
Anything to make watching an ugly loss in the Big 12 last-place game on Fox Sports Midwest tolerable.
“Should have dressed (Dustin) Hogue to play a little linebacker today,” Ward said in the first half. “It’s hard. On the way to get some lawn bags.”
Last week’s disheartening loss to Oklahoma turned Cyclone fans away from Jack Trice Stadium and the Register chat during the game. They stayed on Saturday, keeping the faith and interest long enough to hear a “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” chant and watch the students rip through the goalposts.
“24-point rallies to Kansas are what Paul Rhoads movie scripts and YouTube moments are made of,” SighCy posted.
A “pitiful” first half gave way to flashbacks, but nothing materialized after Grant Rohach’s backpack.
“We want Joel Lanning,” repeated one commentator in different caps throughout the game.
Injured wide receiver Quenton Bundrage added to the outrage when Kansas went up 31-14.
“Too many people here are used to the AVERAGE!” Bundrage posted on Twitter.
Negative football matches on TV were offset by well-being basketball ratings in the chat. Spin it as you like, but the “ExCytement” moves to the Hilton Coliseum.
One fan took the time to put basketball players and coaches in potential football positions.
Another just summed up what it was like to watch another football season go by with a promising hoops campaign just around the corner.
“I am firmly entrenched in the basketball season,” they said.
